Fundraising Policy


New College is a not-for-profit organization that seeks additional funding and support from individuals and organizations. It is committed to the highest ethical standards in the way it solicits funds, keeps a record of donations and engages with donors or potential donors. This document outlines key principles and practices in relation to fundraising and the stewardship of all forms of support and funding. The Canadian Centre for Philanthropy’s Ethical Fundraising & Financial Accountability Code has been a key reference in developing the policy.


Purpose of this policy

To ensure that New College adopts ethical practices in raising funds, keeping records, handling disputes and maintaining the privacy of donors, and to ensure that the Board is kept fully informed of such practices and can be confident that such practices are being adopted.


Procedures and principles in relation to fundraising

Donors’ Rights

  1. All donors (individuals, corporations, and foundations) are entitled to promptly receive an official New College receipt for the amount of the donation. If tax deductibility is requested the official receipt will meet the appropriate Australian Taxation Office standards to qualify as a tax deductible receipt. 
  2. All fundraising by New College will disclose the College’s full name, symbol and the purpose for which funds are requested. Printed solicitations (however transmitted) will also include the College’s address and other contact information.
  3. Donors and prospective donors are entitled to the following, promptly upon request: 
  • New College’s registration number, ABN or ACN, or appropriate documents indicating New College’s endorsement as an income tax exempt charitable entity and endorsement as a deductible gift recipient (if appropriate) as issued by the Australian Taxation Office.
  • A list of the names of the current members of the New College Board.
  • A copy of New College’s fundraising policy document.
  1.  Donors and prospects are entitled to know, upon request, whether an individual soliciting funds on behalf of New College is a volunteer, an employee, or hired  contractor.
  2. Donors will be encouraged to seek independent advice if the College has any reason to believe that a proposed gift might significantly affect the donor’s financial position, taxable income, or relationship with other family members.
  3. Donors’ requests to remain anonymous will always be respected.
  4. Donors’ privacy will be respected; the Privacy Statement the College has adopted will be adhered to. Any donor records that are maintained by New College will be kept confidential to the greatest extent possible. Donors’ have the right to see their own donor record, and to challenge its accuracy. All requests from donors or prospects requiring that fundraising contact cease will have the request honoured by the College.
  5. New College will UNDER NO CIRCUMSTANCES exchange, rent, or otherwise shares its fundraising list with other organisations.
  6. Donors and prospects will be treated with respect by New College. Every effort will be made to honour their requests to: limit the frequency of contacts; not be solicited by telephone or other technology; reduce or cease receiving printed or electronically transmitted material concerning New College.
  7. New College will respond promptly to a complaint by a donor or prospective donor about any matter. The Alumni & Public Relations Coordinator will attempt to satisfy the donor’s concerns in the first instance but if unresolved disputes will be dealt with by the Master and subsequently the Board should satisfaction not be reached.


New College Fundraising Activities

New College will:

  1. act truthfully & fairly in all its communications, dealings and appealing for funds;
  2. not show undue favouritism between donors or be biased against non-donors, nor advantage relatives of donors in relation to admission to the College;
  3. be balanced and not apply excessive pressure or imply that funds must be donated
  4. accurately describe New College activities and the intended use of donated funds
  5. respect the dignity and privacy of those who benefit from New College’s activities;
  6. reserve the right to refuse donations from organizations and individuals with practices inconsistent with the Christian foundations of the College (e.g. donations will not be accepted from organizations that profit from gambling).

New College Financial Accountability

  1. New College’s financial affairs will be conducted in a responsible manner, consistent with the ethical obligations of stewardship and legal requirements of government regulations and in a way consistent with the Christian foundations of the institution.
  2. All donations will be used to support New College’s Mission, aims and objects. If the gift is restricted or designated it will be put to the area selected. All donations will in good faith be used for the purposes for which they are given.
  3. No more will be spent on administration and fundraising than is required to ensure effective management and New College resource development.
  4. The cost-effectiveness of New College’s fundraising program will be reviewed regularly by the Master and (if necessary) the Board.
  5. If the College’s Mission or objects change or the purposes to which a gift/s is put changes the donor must be contacted to seek their permission for any change in the designation of their original gift.
