New College Village (NCV) holds its own informal Christian services in the Main Common Room on the ground floor of the college. These Services occur monthly, and are open to the whole NCV community: you don’t have to be a Christian to come along! The Services are not meant as a substitute for belonging to a local church, but provide an opportunity to have fellowship with other NCV residents who might go to a different church. A typical NCV Service will include a few songs, one or two readings from the Bible, an explanation of the Bible passage and a time of prayer.
The services are co-ordinated by the Dean of Residents with the help of the Senior Ministry Residents. The Master plays an active role in the leadership of the services but residents perform most of the tasks that contribute to the running of these services. For instance, residents typically organise and play the music, lead the singing, read the Bible, lead the prayer time and give the sermon. On occasion the address might be given by the Dean, the Master, an alumnus or a local minister.
After each service attendees will often stay around for a cup of tea and some supper, and maybe even a game or two. NCV Services are a non-threatening way to find out about the Christian faith and to meet a few of the Christians who live at NCV.
