Community Life

image Social Activities
Activities will be organised by the senior residents in conjunction with residents. Events will include activities such as trivia nights, social sport, outdoor activities and trips all for the benefit of residents.  The aim is to build up the community and to encourage residents to get to know one another in a fun, relaxing way.

Community Involvement
New College Village has been built around the concept of community. One of the goals is to promote, enhance and facilitate the involvement of residents within the local and wider community.  Using their particular field of expertise, residents can be at the forefront of social justice, charitable activities and projects.

Pastoral Care
The NCV appoints a number of Senior Residents (SRs) each academic year. They will normally be enrolled in a PhD in its final stages or be working in a research or postdoctoral position at UNSW. There are 6 Senior Resident positions.  Senior Residents will receive at least a 50% reduction in fees and will reside in a one bedroom apartment in the Village. Married Couples cannot jointly apply for Senior Resident positions. Senior Resident position appointments are ongoing subject to a yearly review.

The primary responsibility of SRs is the care and development of residents. This care includes all aspects of working constantly towards a physically, emotionally and psychologically safe environment. SRs also assist with NCV administration out of business hours.

The duty SR and SRs generally have the responsibility for supporting community life and providing advice and assistance in NCV after hours.

SRs are provided with training in how to deal with a wide range of circumstances and to provide advice and support to people with personal concerns. All of the SRs have first aid training and are able to provide such assistance when required as well as take people to hospital for additional treatment if required. The SRs also help to ensure that security in the building is maintained by working with residents to control the flow of non-residents into the building and monitor visitors’ behaviour and movements.

NCV expects residents to accept personal responsibility for their behaviour and anticipates that they will consider other residents’ needs at all times. It may sometimes be necessary, however, for SR’s to remind residents that their behaviour is upsetting others or inappropriate. Residents are asked to comply with all requests from SRs. SRs also act as wardens in the event of an emergency (fire, flood, natural disaster, building failure or explosion etc).

Christian Activities
New College Village is an Anglican residential college founded upon Christian faith and values. In an effort to enrich campus life at UNSW, NCV provides opportunities for discussion and debate concerning Christianity and its relevance in modern society. It applies no religious tests on members of the community but seeks to achieve its goals by supporting a Collegiate community on the campus of UNSW through:

  • the provision of postgraduate accommodation, pastoral care and academic support;
  • the encouragement of and provision for both personal growth in and corporate expression of the Christian faith;
  • the development of scholarship and academic excellence
